Cloyd J. Zeig

Cloyd J. Zeig, 84, of Remsen, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Cloyd J. Zeig was born Dec. 2,1919, at Le Mars, the son of Dennis and Jessie (Becker) Zeig. Cloyd was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Central High School. From there he went to dry cleaning academy. He worked for several dry cleaning establishments in various communities including Omaha, Neb., and Shenandoah and Cherokee, before moving to Remsen and starting his own business, Royal Cleaner, in 1948.

He married Delores Ludwig on Oct. 28, 1941, at Le Mars. He served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 15, 1942 until Dec. 29, 1945. He was the only survivor of nine men who went ahead to set up fire direction on Biak Island in the Philippines where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart for his heroism.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Assembly, Post 220 American Legion and Post 3328 V.F.W., World War II Last Man's Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles 1381 of Le Mars and served as a board member of the Happy Siesta Health Care Center. He was a past member of the Remsen Chamber of Commerce and the Remsen Lions Club. He had served on the Remsen city council for 12 years, was a past mayor pro tem and had served on the Remsen Utility Board for 15 years.

Survivors include his wife, Delores of Remsen, two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Larry Beckmann of Remsen and Kim and Ray Wilkens of Le Mars; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Dan and his wife, Debbie Beckmann and their children Kassie, Tyler and Abby, all of Omaha, Neb., Michelle and her husband, Russ Schroeder and their children Cameron, Danielle, Shelby and Noah, all of Remsen, Jaime and her husband, Matt Homan and their son Devin, all of Remsen, Becky Wilkens of Ames and Sara Wilkens of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Jessica Wilkens.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, with graveside military rites conducted by Post 220 American Legion and Post 3328 V.F.W.

Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There was a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard and chalice service.

Casketbearers were Dan Beckmann, Russ Schroeder, Matt Homan, Ron Wiltgen, Jerry Staab and Jay Becker. Members of the Knights of Columbus served as honorary bearers.
