Virgil T. Ross, 91, of Akron, and formerly of Westfield, died Sunday, May 1, 2005 , at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Virgil Thomas Ross was born March 9, 1914, in Merrill, the son of Fred C. and Gertrude (Thomas) Ross. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at the Merrill United Methodist Church. He attended school in Merrill, and graduated from Merrill High School in 1932. He was united in marriage to Vera Michael on March 21, 1938, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Together, they were the parents of four children, Alyce, Thomas, Carolyn and James.

The couple lived in the Westfield area for many years. Virgil worked for the Akron Creamery for 12 years before beginning his long career as an independent truck driver. He trucked for many years, hauling livestock and grain. Following his retirement at the age of 65, he worked for David Lilly on his farm for many years. Later, he and Vera moved to Akron. Most recently, he was a resident of the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Virgil was a longtime member of the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield, where he served as a deacon for over 40 years and also ushered. He enjoyed playing drums at dances, and traveling with his wife. He liked to go fishing and hunting. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family where they knew him as "Papa."

Survivors include his wife of over 67 years, Vera of Akron; his four children, Alyce Dion and her husband, Donald of Westfield, Thomas Ross and his wife, Bethene of Akron, Carolyn Marienau and her husband, James of Ankeny, and James Ross and his wife, Barbara of Elk Point, S.D.; one brother, Claude Ross and his wife, Blanche of McMinnville, Ore.; two sisters, Helen Johnson of Akron and Cora Jans of Hawarden; nine grandchildren, Debra Hauser and her husband, Ned of Akron, Melinda Dion of Akron, Tamara Adams and her husband, Mark of Ankeny, Amy Rollins and her husband, Brian of Akron, Teresa Ross-Engel and her husband, Chad of Marshalltown, Kimberly Ross-Swancutt and her husband, Todd of Merrill, Melanie Mortimer and her husband, James of Orlando, Fla., James Ross, Jr. and his wife, Wendy of Rapid City, S.D., and Danielle Dion of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was escorted into heaven by his grandson, Scott Ross, who died July 20, 2005. His parents and a brother, Loren Ross, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield with the Rev. Steven Jewitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Westfield Cemetery in Westfield. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Wednesday), with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Pallbearers will be Jim Ross, Jr., Ned Hauser, Brian Rollins, Todd Swancutt, Chad Engel, Mark Adams and Jim Mortimer. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters.
