Betty Lou (Schmitz) Malchose, a Chatsworth, Calif., resident since 1972, died at noon Friday, June 6, 2007, of an apparent heart attack. She was 73.
The former Betty Lou Schmitz was born Jan. 7, 1935, in Le Mars, the daughter of Florence and Albert Schmitz.
She attended Remsen High School and Iowa State University before going to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1957 to teach home economics at Bancroft, Mulholland and Frost Jr. High Schools before arriving at West Granada High School as a math/science teacher where she stayed for 11 years.
Betty survived breast cancer and took early retirement from teaching in 1995 and since 2001, devoted her time to what she called her "White House Project." When completed, it would have brought together all she could find relating to The White House, its inhabitants, contents and entertainment from articles and research notes taken from 482 books, most of which she owned.
She leaves behind a strong circle of family and friends who will miss her deeply.
Betty is survived by her cherished and devoted husband of almost 25 years, Jack Malchose of Chatsworth, Calif.; her only child, daughter Rylee-Ann Romero of Westchester, Calif. (born in Ames); brother, Albert M. Schmitz of Alexandria, Minn.; sister, Constance (Connie) Price, of Omaha, Neb.; several cousins, nieces and a nephew.
Based on her instructions, Betty's family held a brief and simple memorial service to celebrate her life and share the good memories of the love she had for each of us.
In lieu of flowers, a donation of any size to the Congressional Cemetery Restoration Project in Washington, D.C. is respectfully requested.
