Leander F. "Lee" Pick, 63, of Avoca, Minn., and formerly of Alton, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, as a result of injuries sustained in an accident on his farm near Avoca.
Leander F. "Lee" Pick, the son of Lawrence and Cecilia (Pletschette) Pick, was born May 29, 1944, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars where his aunt, Sister Lea Pick was in attendance. Lee was raised in the Alton area and received his education at St. Mary Grade and High School in Alton, from which he graduated in May 1962. After having served in the Iowa National Guard for a short time, he worked on the family farm until he moved to Avoca, Minn. in March 1973, when he began farming on his own.
He was a member of St. Ann Parish in Slayton, Minn., served on St. Ann Parish Council, was a member of the Parish Liturgical Committee, and was a regular participant of the St. Ann Annual Christmas festival. He was a member of American Legion Post 0576 of Avoca.
In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards, fishing, attending farm sales, visiting with friends, and especially looked forward to those times at the local café having breakfast in the morning where he caught up on the local news. Above all, Lee cared for his family of four brothers, and enjoyed his nieces and nephews.
Survivors include four brothers, Father Anthony Pick of Dedham and Coon Rapids, Phillip of Alton, Ray and his wife Janice of Albuquerque, N.M., Walter and his wife Kay of Alton; three nieces, Stephanie, Natalie and Rachelle Pick; and three nephews, Andy, Adam and Ryan Pick.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. Anthony Pick and the Rev. John Vakulskas concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Alton. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Floyd Post 200 American Legion of Alton. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday). There will a be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary Rosary Society and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alton. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.
