Dorthy Casteel of Atlantic, died Friday, May 2, 2008, after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Casteel lived in Le Mars on Central Avenue with her husband James Casteel from 1949 to 1964.

She was born Dec. 25, 1919, on a farm outside of Creighton, Neb., the daughter of Henry and Mary Klosner. She graduated from St. Ludger's Academy in Creighton and attended Wayne State College in Nebraska, where she earned a teaching certificate and then taught for a time in country schools.

In 1941, Dorthy married James A. Casteel, who was also from Creighton. At the time, Mr. Casteel was about to leave for a tour of duty in Alaska and later in Europe, where he served as a medic in the Third Army. After World War II, the couple settled first in Creighton and then moved to Le Mars where they began to raise their large family. They were members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and many of their children attended St. Joseph's School and Gehlen High School. They left Le Mars in 1964 and settled in Atlantic.

Dorthy is survived by her 15 children, James Casteel of Santa Monica, Calif.; Barbara and Jack Ulveling of Atlantic; Patricia and Steve Wylie of New York, N.Y.; Jacquelyn Casteel of Atlantic; Linda and John Laughlin of Omaha, Neb.; Tom and Debbie Casteel of Maryville, Mo.; Bill Casteel and Mary Juhler of Atlantic; Larry Casteel of Omaha, Neb.; Mary and Gus Abdallah of Atlantic; Suzanne Casteel of Raleigh, N.C.; Donna and David Andersen of Atlantic; Cathy and Tom Hartkopf of Atlantic; Steven and Natalie Casteel of Raleigh, N.C.; John Casteel of Lincoln, Neb.; and Ann and Joe Hayes of Atlantic; 25 grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, her five brothers and sisters and two grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Thursday, May 8 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic.
