Lyle Simons, 82, of Kingsley, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at his home near Kingsley.
Carl Lyle Simons was born Oct. 19, 1925, at Fielding, Iowa, the son of Irvin and Inez (Lehman) Simons. He was raised in the Hawarden and Sheldon areas. Following his education, Lyle farmed in northwest Iowa. On Dec. 27, 1950, Lyle and Marvel M. Franklin were united in marriage at the United Church of Christ in Kingsley. On March 16, 1951, Lyle enlisted and proudly served in the Untied States Army during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Corporal having served as an aviation engineer with Company B, prior to his honorable discharge on Dec. 15, 1952. Lyle and Marvel made their home on a farm near Sheldon. In 1962 they returned to the Kingsley area to farm. Marvel died Friday, June 25, 2004.
Lyle was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Kingsley. He once served as president of the Kingsley Elevator Board and was a member of the Iowa Cattleman's Association. Lyle was also a member of the Nash American Legion Post #140 and Cosmos Masonic Lodge #470, both of Kingsley.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time laughing with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. His greatest passion in life was farming.
Lyle will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters Marsha Spaulding and her husband Don of Des Moines, and Deb Byrnes and her husband John of Omaha, Neb.; a son Phil Simons and his fiancée Peggy Beach of Kingsley; 10 grandchildren, Eric Berg and his wife Stephanie, Corey Berg, Jebb Stewart and his wife Jana, Kylee Stewart, Jacob Stewart and his wife Brianne, Erin, Michael and Collin Byrnes, Tyler and Cole Simons; 10 great-grandchildren Emily, Olivia, Abigail Berg and Eric Berg II, Chance Stewart, Lucas, Landon and Logan Stewart, Hannah and Leah Stewart; a brother Eldon Simons of Sequin, Texas; two sisters-in-law Elaine Creasy and Lois Franklin of Kingsley; a brother-in-law Laurel Franklin and his wife Eileen of Florida; and many close nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marvel; a daughter Lori Cooney on May 21, 2003; two sisters Blanche Newman and Beverly Cox; and a brother Irvin Jr.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Kingsley. The Rev. Robert Blair will officiate. Burial will follow at the Kingsley Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Nash American Legion Post #140 of Kingsley. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Friday) at the Johnson -- Earnest Funeral Home of Kingsley. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Saturday.
