Delbert L. Van Skike, 87, of Ireton, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Delbert was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Vinton, the son of Edith (Chenhall) Van Skike. He graduated from Ireton High School in 1938. He married the love of his life, Nancy Ann Gary, in Houston, Texas, on Feb. 19, 1955. They made their home on the family farm where he raised cattle and crops for most of his life.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ireton. Del was an avid horseman and spent many hours riding with his children, grandchildren, and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Sioux County.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Nancy; two sons and their wives, Gary and Joan (Humpal) Van Skike of Maurice, and Troy and Patti (Westerman) Van Skike, of Ireton; a daughter, Debra Ann Van Skike of Hermosa, S.D.; a sister, Mary and husband Bill Jinks of Churdan; a brother, Hubert Van Skike, of Sioux Center; six granddaughters, Lexie and husband Eric Bennett of Raleigh, N.C., Darci Van Skike of Omaha, Neb., Heidi Van Skike of Iowa City, Laura Van Skike of Ames, Nikki Van Skike of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Amy Van Skike of Ireton; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson, Eva Marie and Nolan Gary Bennett; sister-in-law Opal Langston and husband Max of New Orleans, La.; brother-in-law Cal Gary Jr. and wife Kay of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law Ima (Gary) Grossinger of Dayton, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Edith (Chenhall) Van Skike; two brothers, John and Bill Van Skike; brother-in-law Isaac Gary; mother-in-law Hazel (Gary) Oglesby and husband Lamar; and father-in-law Caleb Gary Sr.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Ireton, with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton immediately following the service. Visitation with the family present will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24, before the service. The Porter Funeral Home of Ireton is in charge of arrangements.
