Shirley Marie McLaughlin, 73, of Sioux City died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at her residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Shirley was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Florentine (Stoos) Nitzschke. She graduated from Remsen's St. Mary's High School. She had been a resident of Sioux City since 1949. She worked at St. Luke's Hospital as a dietary supervisor.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She loved crocheting and making blankets for her kids and grandkids. She loved spending time with her family. She loved walking down by the river. She also worked with the lunch program at Roosevelt Elementary School.

Survivors include four sons, Daniel and Mary McLaughlin of Kansas City, Mo., Ronald and Dana McLaughlin of Fort Worth, Texas, Richard and Mary Jo McLaughlin of Sioux City and R.J. McLaughlin Jr.; two daughters, Jean Marie Kierscht of Sarasota, Fla., and Robin and Pat Johnson of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Elmer, Ronald, Dale and David Nitzschke; and two sisters, Norma Peterson and Mary Lindblom.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-grandchild; and a brother, John Nitzschke.

Pallbearers will be Cody Lee Schuldt, Jeremy McLaughlin, Heather McLaughlin, Michael McLaughlin, Sarah McLaughlin and Mitchell McLaughlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Brittney McLaughlin, Malia McLaughlin and Melissa Mobley.
