WILLIAM “BILL” J. FLYNN

William “Bill” John Flynn, age 70, died February 11, 2008, at Lompoc Hospital after suffering from a stroke and heart attack. He was born January 9, 1938, in LeMars, Plymouth County, Iowa.

He spent his pre-school years in Merrill and Sioux City, Iowa, and then moved with his family to St. Cloud, Minnesota, in 1943. He attended St. Augustine Catholic Elementary School and completed his freshman year at St. Cloud Cathedral High School. The family moved back to Iowa in September of 1953, this time to the town of Doon.

Bill graduated from Doon High School in 1956. He was the recipient of the school’s Citizenship Award at graduation.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. His many technology assignments in the Air Force eventually brought him to Vandenberg Air Force Base and the Lompoc community, where he spent more than half his life. After serving in the USAF, he went to work for the ITT Corporation at Vandenberg until he retired.

His many activities in Lompoc included membership in the American Legion Post 211 and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 1036.

Bill is survived by his wife of 33 years, Betty Flynn of Lompoc; stepdaughters Tammy Martin, of Los Alamos, Donna Martin of Nipomo, Angie Martin of Lompoc, granddaughter, Liliana Gutierrez of Lompoc, Tami Myers of Lompoc, brother and sister-in-law Terry and Carol of White Bluff, TN; brother and sister-in-law Ron and Carol of Mesa, AZ; sister and brother-in-law Patricia and Ron Anderson of Hanley Falls, MN; brother and sister-in-law Daniel and Victoria Runkle of Arvada, CO; brother Colin of Marion, IA; and sister and brother-in-law Colleen and Ron Prokop, also of Marion, IA, as well and 13 nieces, nephews and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Paul and Marjorie (Rush) Flynn, and an infant brother, David Flynn.

A nicheside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery’s Columbarium with Pastor Robert Robison of North Avenue Baptist Church officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
