Douglas John Beeck, 64, of Nevada City, Calif., and a Le Mars native, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his home in Nevada City, surrounded by several loving family members.

Douglas John Beeck was born May 26, 1943 in Le Mars, and grew up on a farm at Le Mars. He met his wife Susan at 18; they were married three years later on Nov. 7, 1964. They lived in Sioux City, until he went into the Army on his birthday in 1968. He served actively in Vietnam as a medic from Dec. 1, 1968 to Dec. 31, 1969. with I Troop 3/11, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He was stationed in Presidio, San Francisco upon his return. He and his wife moved to San Jose in 1970, where he began his career as a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office and started a family. He worked as a letter carrier for 35 years, serving for several as a Union steward.

Doug and his wife retired to Nevada City in 2003. He joined his son as active co-owner of Clearwater Aquatic Gardens, until he became ill.

Doug was diagnosed with lung cancer Dec. 16, 2007, and was taken from us far too quickly.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, of 42 years; his son, Nathan and daughter in-law Gina, granddaughters Lilly Carson, Emily Carson and Danielle Carson of Auburn, Calif.; daughter Nicole and son-in-law Timothy Kenny and grandson Ryan of San Jose, Calif.; his mother, Laverne Beeck, brother Ronald and sister in-law Susan (Morgan Hill), brother Donald and sister-in-law Ann, of Eugene, Ore., sister Carol and brother-in-law David of Sun City, Ariz., brother Russell of San Jose, Calif., brother Dale of San Jose, Calif., brother Paul and sister-in-law Vivian of Rancho Cordova, Calif., brother Larry and sister-in-law Bobbie of Manteca, Calif., brother Keith and sister-in-law Linda of Oakdale, Calif., and sister Patty and brother-in-law Paul of Citrus Heights, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City, Calif. Interment with military honors will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 11, Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.

Donations can be made, in lieu of flowers, to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Foothills in Grass Valley, Calif.
