Russell R. McLarty, 85, of Kingsley, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Russell Richard McLarty was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Smithland, Iowa the son of Cecil and Rubie (Bowman) McLarty. Russell's father died one year later and Rubie married Glen Barngrover. He graduated from Hornick High School in 1938. On Sept. 23, 1942, Russell and Marjorie Westergaard were united in marriage at Dakota City, Neb. Russell entered in the United States Army Air Corps in October 1942. He served his country during World War II and attained the rank of corporal prior to his honorable discharge in March of 1945. Following the war the couple farmed near Luton. They moved to Correctionville where Russell managed the Standard Service Station.

In 1946 the family moved to Kingsley and Russell opened Russ' Standard Station. He operated the station until 1958 when he became the postmaster of Kingsley. He served the community until his retirement in 1981.

Russell was an active member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church. He was also an active member of the community and served on the board of the Kingsley School Board, was past president of the Kingsley Bombers and the Kingsley Lions Club; past fire chief with the Kingsley Fire Department; and was Kingsley's first EMT.

Russell was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Nash American Legion Post #140.

He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 65 years Marjorie of Kingsley; four children Patricia (Thomas Sr.) Saltzman of North Sioux City, S.D., Michael (Cherie) McLarty of Carlsbad, Calif., Kathleen (Michael) Blair of Urbandale, and Debra (Tim) Timmins of Hinton; grandchildren Thomas (Penny) Saltzman Jr., Tammy (Mike) Steemken, Tim (Brenda) Saltzman, Tanay (special freind Brent Tracy) Saltzman, Adam, Megan, and Shelby McLarty, April Blair, Christopher (Katie) Blair, Molly and John Timmins; eight great-grandchildren; brothers Ernie Barngrover of Brookfield, Mo., Ronnie Barngrover of Smithland, Dave (Pat) Barngrover of Smithland; a brother-in-law August (Carolyn) Westergaard of Whiting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Lois Bruins and Lyla Schupe; brothers Lewis McLarty, Donnie and Eddie Barngrover.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingsley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Roger Kurtenbach will officiate. Burial will follow at the Kingsley Cemetery with military honors provided by Nash American Legion Post #140 of Kingsley. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Kingsley United Methodist Church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral. The Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home of Kingsley is in charge of arrangements.
