Catherine Herbst Rosenow, 87, of Merrill, died Aug. 12, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center, in Sioux City.

Catherine H. Mulder was born March 8, 1920, on the family farm south west of Merrill, to Peter and Margarethe (Petersen) Mulder. She was baptized Sept. 3, 1921, and confirmed May 5, 1935, at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. She attended country school and Merrill High School.

Catherine married Arlo Norman Herbst on June 17, 1941, at Dakota City, Neb. The Herbsts settled into farming locating on a farm near Westfield for a year, and then moving to a farm west of Merrill. They raised their three children on this farm where she enjoyed cooking, tending her garden and entertaining family and neighbors. Arlo died on June 8, 1962. Catherine continued to reside on the family farm until December 1967, when she built a home and retired in Merrill.

She married Charles Thomas Rosenow on Sept. 30, 1978, at Aberdeen, S.D. They enjoyed traveling and attending functions in the community, especially concerning their grandchildren. They faithfully attended St. John Lutheran Church services, and Catherine served as the church treasurer for 25 years, as well as attending Leah circle, and assisting with funeral lunch committee. Charlie died March 7, 1995.

Catherine did volunteer work for Floyd Valley Hospital, embroidering dish towels, which she was honored in March 2007, for completing 5,000 hours. She was also honored by the Siouxland Dialysis Center in 2006 with the Patient Excellence Award "for her commitment to life and the circle of care."

Catherine is survived by her three children: Leon and his wife, Candice, of Merrill, Lois and her husband, James Antonen, of Davis, Calif., and Patricia and her husband, Gilbert Winter of Le Mars; six grandchildren; three step-children; Larry and Twila Rosenow, of Grinnell, Betty and Stan Wilkens of Sheldon, and Kathy and Bob Davis, of Des Moines; seven step-grandchildren, and 13 step-great-grandchildren. Catherine is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Dorothy and her husband Wayne Brown of Le Mars, MaryAnne Herbst and Dorothy Herbst of Merrill, and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, Arlo Herbst and Charlie Rosenow; her parents; her in-laws, Guss and Katie (Arbuck) Herbst; three sisters, Jennie Bremer, Anna Bock, and Elsie Mulder; and two brothers, Theodore and John Mulder.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Pallbearers will be Scott Winter, Justin Herbst, Charles Antonen, Matthew Antonen, Patrick Antonen, and Tod Henrich. Honorary pallbearers will be Kirk Rosenow, Lynda Barton, Troy Wilken, Joel Maske, Christopher Maske, Janet Bobzien, Diane Merley, and Noel Henrich.
