Jeanne K. (LaTelle) Slater

KINGSLEY, Iowa -- Jeanne K. (LaTelle) Slater, 60, of Kingsley entered the divine gates of heaven surrounded by her family on Sunday, Oct. 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Kingsley, with the Rev. Duane Meisner officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Jeanne was born on Sept. 19, 1947, in Sioux City, the daughter of Jean and Frances (Soiseth) LaTelle. She was a graduate of East High School in 1965. After graduation she worked briefly at Younker Davidson Department Store as a buyer before moving to Chicago, Ill. While there, she was employed by Bantam Books and later, J.C. Penney Department Store.

She met and married the "love of her life" William Slater in 1987. Shortly after Bill's untimely death in 1998, she moved back to Iowa and settled in the town of Kingsley, where she made many wonderful new friends, all of whom she cherished so much. She was an "adopted" daughter to the Barth Family and enjoyed all the family gatherings, playing cards and especially eating at Ed's Cafe. She was employed by J.C. Penney Department Store in the "Made to Order" drapery department, where she excelled in sales and service.

Jeanne passed away after a very brief battle with ovarian cancer. As a family, we loved her enough to let her go knowing as we let go of her hand here on Earth, there was another hand waiting to embrace her with the peace, warmth and abiding love she so richly deserved in heaven. Selfishly as we mourn the loss of our sister, we know there must be a special reason why she was chosen to walk hand in hand with the Lord.

Jeanne is survived by her brothers, Gary LaTelle and his wife, Therese of West Chicago, Ill., Dennis LaTelle and his wife, Liz of Oak Forest, Ill., and Randy LaTelle of Lincoln, Neb.; her sisters, Melinda and her husband, Duane Fischer of Blue Springs, Mo., and Marlene and her husband, Brian Barth of Kingsley, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews, all who loved her very much.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Slater; and her parents.

Our family wishes to thank the many friends who helped us during Jeanne's short illness. We also wish to thank Hospice of Siouxland; the oncology nurses and staff at St. Luke's Hospital, who took such wonderful care of our sweet sister and especially, her oncologist, Dr. John Michalak, who truly devotes his life to caring with such great compassion for those who need him the most. Dr. Michalak, "You are the Best."
