Douglas P. Mertes, 58, of Merrill, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at his home in Merrill.

Douglas Paul Mertes was born April 18, 1949 in Le Mars, the son of John "Clem" and Kathleen (Schlesser) Mertes. Doug graduated from Gehlen Catholic School in 1967. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict from October 1968 until his honorable discharge in October 1974.

Doug was united in marriage to Jane Brennan on Aug. 4, 1984 at Le Mars. He had worked as a rural mail carrier for the past 20 years with the Sioux City Post Office.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Jane of Merrill; his father John "Clem" Mertes of Merrill; two brothers, Ken Mertes of Onawa and Mark Mertes and his wife MaryEllen of Sibley; a sister, Joan Yoerger and her husband Stan of Merrill; his father-in-law, Bernard Brennan of Rockwell City; a sister-in-law, Sue Daisy and her husband Terry of Rockwell City; a brother-in-law, Ron Brennan and his wife Cheri of Bloomington, Ill.; 12 nieces and nephews and 14 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen (Schlesser) Mertes; and a brother, Bill Mertes.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with Father Dan Greving of the Merrill Assumption Catholic Church officiating. Inurnment with military honors provided by the Olson-Halweg American Legion Post #125 of Merrill will be in Assumption Catholic Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be after 4 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
