ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Merle L. Dagel, 85, of Orange City passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, with the Rev. Jonathan Opgenorth officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home.

Merle LeRoy was born July 5, 1922, in Sibley, Iowa, the son of Alonzo and Irene (Pulsher) Dagel. He was raised in the Sibley area, where he attended country schools and graduated from Sibley High School.

On April 5, 1951, he married Eunice Evink at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They first farmed in Slayton, Minn., for a year, then in Sanborn, Iowa, for a few years. Most of their married life, they farmed in Sibley which he thoroughly enjoyed. In April 1987, they moved to Orange City. In semiretirement, he worked part-time at the Wal-Mart Store in Sioux Center, Iowa.

He was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. He enjoyed nature and being outdoors, especially gardening and taking his grandchildren fishing.

Survivors include his wife of more than 56 years; five children, Merle Dagel Jr. of Sioux Falls, S.D., Randall Dagel of Portland, Ore., Glenda and her husband, Paul Homan of Le Mars, Iowa, Dianne and her husband, Michael Roeder of Orange City and Douglas Dagel of Crosby, Minn.; 16 grandchildren, Jon, Heather, Travis, Kellie, Miranda, Kendra, Brandon, Kelsey, Austin, Katrina, Shawn, Tristen, Brandi, Kourtney, Elizabeth and Kimberly; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elinor Mayer of Marshall, Minn.; and a brother and his wife, Edward and Betty Dagel of Sibley, Iowa.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl Hensch and three in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Orange City Area Home and Health Hospice.
