Lorraine J. Henry, 79, of Kingsley, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at her home in Kingsley.

Lorraine J. Palo was born July 24, 1928, in Deadwood, S.D., the daughter of Jacob Alvin and Mary Vilda (Lakson) Palo. Her family lived in Fruitdale, South Dakota for nine months before moving to Newell, S.D. Lorraine was raised in Newell, baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, and graduated from Newell High School in 1947.

On May 9, 1948 Lorraine and Willard Ward Beckham were united in marriage at First Lutheran Church in Newell. They made their home in Deadwood and Belle Fourche, South Dakota where Willard worked in auto part sales. In 1953 Lorraine and Willard moved to Sturgis and opened an auto parts distribution business. They operated the business until Willard died in 1977, then Lorraine sold the business to a nephew.

Lorraine lived with her daughter Janice in Kingsley while enrolling in a medical secretary program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. Upon completion of the program she returned to Sturgis to work at the Sturgis Community Hospital. She was employed as a ward clerk for the next 11 years. After retiring she met and married Judson Charles "Jud" Henry on Aug. 18, 1990. They made their home in Kingsley. Jud died Dec. 15, 2001.

Lorraine was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville. She was currently the secretary of WELCA and had served on many committees throughout the years. She enjoyed playing cards and attending plays at the Orpheum Theater, Sioux City Community Theater, and Lamb Productions. In South Dakota, Lorraine was actively involved with the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary.

Most of all Lorraine enjoyed the time spent with her family and friends, especially watching her grandchildren participate in their activities.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Janice Thompson and her husband Barry of Kingsley; grandchildren Jennifer Shaheen of Vermillion, S.D., and Chad Thompson and his wife Jessica of Kingsley; great-grandchildren Jameson Shaheen of Vermillion, S.D., Alexandra and Abigail Thompson of Kingsley; a brother Harlan Palo and his wife Joan of Newell, S.D., and their children; two stepdaughters, Susan and Ray Cole of Clive and Joelyn and Scott Riemenschneider of Kingsley; a stepson Gary and Lynette Henry of Holstein; stepgrandchildren Rachael, Kim and Kindra Henry, Kristy (Jeff) Latta, Brittney and Brandon Cole, Courtney and Carson Riemenschneider; step-great-grandchildren Taylor and Maddie Henry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Willard and Jud; and two infant daughters.

Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville. Pastor Burt Burwell will officiate. Burial will follow at a later date at the Snoma Cemetery near St. Onge, S.D. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. tody (Friday) at the Rohde - Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the memorial service on Saturday.
