Max E. Messerole, 87, of Red Oak and formerly of Pierson, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak following a brief illness.

Max E. Messerole was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Pierson, the son of Roy and Willye (Hearn) Messerole. Max attended school in Pierson, graduating in 1939. He loved sports and excelled in baseball as a pitcher.

On Oct. 23, 1942, Max was inducted into the United States Army. He served as a combat engineer during World War II and fought in four major campaigns. He was awarded four Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and earned the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 19, 1945 having attained the rank of Tec. 5.

Following the war Max made Council Bluffs his home. He worked in Omaha, Neb., at Lozier Company as a sheet metal worker for many years. He retired and moved to Red Oak. He was a resident at the Good Samaritan Center for a brief time.

Max was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing. He also listened to a great deal of jazz and big band music.

He is lovingly remembered by his sister Beatrice Messerole of South Sioux City, Neb.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Mel; and two sisters Bernice and Beryl.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson- Earnest Funeral Home of Kingsley. The Rev. Roger Kurtenbach of the Kingsley United Methodist Church will officiate. Private burial services will follow. There will be one hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to the service on Saturday.
