Peter Hibma, age 91, of Maurice, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

Peter was born July 7, 1916, at Ocheyedan, the son of Sip and Hendrika (Rumkus) Hibma. He was raised in the Carmel, Alton, and Maurice areas and attended school at Maurice.

On Dec. 6, 1944, he married Grace Jans at Hull. They farmed at Maurice all their married life.

Pete thoroughly enjoyed farming, especially doing field work and milking cows. He was fond of John Deere tractors and in later years did some fishing.

He was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife of more than 63 years; a son, Dean Hibma, and a daughter and her husband, Minerva and Ken Small, all of Maurice; three step-granddaughters and their families, who live in the Iowa Great Lakes area; two sisters, Anna Schaap, of Sioux Center; and Alid and her husband, Leonard Topp, of Holland, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Hibma, of Marne, Mich., and Gloria Hibma, of Holland, Mich.; and extended family members, Jim and Mary Hoogland, of Maurice, and their children and grandchildren, Jennifer and Curt Vlietstra, and Jakob, Cade, and Bryce; Ron and Martha Hulshof, and Kendra Grace (deceased), Ethan, Tyrell, Cassidy, and Wyatt; Maranda and Vasyl Heytsi; Janna and Brian Aukes, and Jaren; Sveta and Mark Schubert, and Kyle; Jordan and Julie Hoogland, and Brooklyn; and Marlena and Ryan De Jong.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryne Hibma; three brothers, William Hibma, the Rev. John Edward Hibma, and Gerrit Hibma; and a brother-in-law, John Schaap.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot and the Rev. David Ter Beest will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Friday), with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Maranda (Hoogland) and Vasyl Heytsi, missionaries in the Ukraine.
