Herbert E. "Eddie" Grinstead, 81, of Le Mars, and formerly of New London, Iowa and Amarillo, Texas, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars.
Mr. Grinstead was born Dec. 11, 1926, in Danville, Iowa, the son of Glenn Ray and Wilma Leota (Smith) Grinstead. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a radio operator. He received a technical degree in electronics in Chicago.
He married Alice L. McElhaney on Feb. 4, 1950, in Burlington. She died June 30, 2007.
He worked at Sylvania and then IAPP until 1974 when he was transferred to Amarillo to work at Pantex. In New London he worked as a part-time TV repairman.
He was a member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Amarillo, and a former member of New London United Methodist Church. He was a 50-year member of the Masons. In New London, he was a Boy Scout leader, receiving the Silver Beaver Award.
He enjoyed his family and friends, boating, fishing, hunting, reading, pets and life in general. He had many friends in both Iowa and Texas.
Survivors include one son, Ray and his wife, Lois Grinstead of Le Mars; two grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Litton of Mt. Pleasant and Leota Gilbert of Villa Park, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel in New London, with the Rev. Dot Hasler officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery in New Lonton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Elliott Chapel in New London, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. to greet friends.
A memorial has been established in his name.
