Marvel Hartel, 82, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Marvel Iona Hartle was born Nov. 3, 1925, near Kingsley, the daughter of Ira N. and Clara (MCConnell) Mitchell. She attended country schools near her home. Following primary school marvel attended one year at Lawton High School and graduated salutatorian from Climbing Hill High School in 1943. She went to work for Western Union in Sioux City. She was transferred to Chicago, Ill., and later Seattle, Wash., where she met and married Eugene Hartle in 1947. In 1950 the couple moved to Morehead, Iowa for one year before settling in Le Mars. Marvel went to work for Iowa Public Service (IPS) and retired from her career after completing over 20 years of service.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church. Marvel was a caretaker to many, providing visits and rides to whomever needed it. She volunteered her time with Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, and several other organizations.
Marvel enjoyed knitting, tatting, crocheting, needlepoint, and was an avid reader all her life.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son Doyle Hartle and his wife Tonda of Champaign, Ill.; grandchildren Jon Hartle of Des Moines, Teisha Hartle of Nevada, Jason Hartle of Champaign, Ill., Julie Behm and her husband David of Philo, Ill; great-grandchildren, Hiley Freeman, Michah Freeman and Darilynn Behm of Philo, Ill; sisters and brothers, Wilma and Joe Schuldt of Sioux City, John and Evelyn Mitchell of Sioux City, Lila Howard of Moville, Neal and Mary Mitchell of Correctionville; a sister-in-law Delora Mitchell of Washta; and several nieces and nephews.
She was proceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Ira Duane Mitchell and Howard Dean Mitchell.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. The Rev. Jason Larson will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date at the West Fork Township Cemetery in Climbing Hill. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Tuesday.
