LE MARS, Iowa -- Colleen Rhodes, 80, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Le Mars, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Provena St. Anne Center in Rockford.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Merrill, Iowa, with Pastor Benjamin Meeks officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
Colleen Ellen Lindsey was born on Oct. 11, 1924 on a farm near Merrill, the daughter of Arthur and Ellen (Lake) Lindsey. She graduated as valedictorian from Liberty High School in 1943.
On Feb. 18, 1945, she was united in marriage to Wendell Rhodes at Riverside, Calif. They made their home in Brookings, S.D., while Wendell finished college at SDSU. They moved to Albert Lea, Minn., where both Colleen and Wendell worked for the Albert Lea Tribune. The couple moved to Rockford in 1956. Colleen worked for Ideal Uniform Services in Rockford for 29 years, retiring in 1986.
She was a member of Broadway Methodist Church. She was also a member of Altrusa International and Credit Women's International where she served as second vice president. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and embroidery, and was a volunteer at Midway Village Museum. Colleen's great-grandfather was a founder in Rockford and helped to build the Lake Peterson House.
Survivors include her husband, Wendell of Rockford; a brother, Duane Lindsey of Edina, Minn; close family members, Ron Morris and his wife Betty of Stillman Valley, Ill., and Sara and Brian Morris of Rockford; nieces and nephews, Jack Lindsey and his wife Deb, Tom Lindsey, Susan Young and her husband Jerry, Danet Ketlesen and her husband John, Rick Lindsey and Mike Lindsey and his wife Marcy; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clinton; two sisters-in-law, Janet Lindsey and Marion Lindsey; and a nephew, Randall Lindsey.
