DAKOTA CITY -- Celene Brooks, 61, of Dakota City died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in Wheat Ridge, Colo., following a sudden illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Daniel L. Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Celene was born June 12, 1941, in Kingsley, Iowa, to Arlo B. and Josephine A. (Flammang) VanBuskirk. She attended country schools before moving with her family to South Sioux City in 1952, where she completed school.

She married Robert Brooks on July 21, 1958. They lived in California, Oregon and Oklahoma for several years before returning to South Sioux City in 1970.

She was employed with IBP for 30 years, most recently in quality control. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Josephine of South Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Robin and Ronnie Bobier of South Sioux City, Rhonda and Bill Hattig of Dakota City, and Shelly and Mark Knox of Golden, Colo.; four grandchildren, Jason and Adam Bobier and Brianna and Cody Hattig; a brother, Lawrence VanBuskirk of South Sioux City; and six sisters, Arla Jean Bossow and her companion, Tiny Sexton of Sioux City, Mary Jo and her husband, Vern Mayberry of Winnebago, Neb., Carol and her husband, Nick Simon of Sioux City, Barbara and her husband, Walter Zastrow of South Sioux City, Joan and her husband, Tom Zastrow of South Sioux City, and Deanna and her husband, Bill Engel Jr. of South Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her father; an infant son, Ricky; an infant brother, James; an infant sister, Gerlyn Sue; and her special companion, Randy Klein.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, Kevin Johnson, Jim Johnson, Blake Simon, Mike VanBuskirk, Travis VanBuskirk, and family friend, Mark Boyd.
