MARLYN H. BONNEMA
ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Marlyn Herman “Doc” Bonnema, 72, of Orange City died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Paul E. Bakker officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. at Ooolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mr. Bonnema was born Sept. 9, 1928, in rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Harry and Dora (Mohlman) Bonnema. He was raised in LeMars, Iowa, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He married Joan W. Hofmeyer on Sept. 26, 1951, in Orange City. The couple lived briefly in Sioux City before making their home in Orange City. He was employed as a mechanical engineer.
He was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as a deacon and had been a cadet counselor. He was also a member of American Legion Pressman-Kosters Post in Orange City. He served as a foster grandparent at Hope Haven for five years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Larry and Treva of Plattsmouth, Neb., and Daniel and Debra of Grinnell, Iowa; six grandchildren, John, Jason, Eric and Jessi Bonnema, Jeremy Verschoor and Jodi Benson; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald of Bremerton, Wash.; and a sister, Evelyn Ludwigs, of LeMars.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Randy; a granddaughter, Joellen; and three brothers, Harry, Orville and Frank.
