SERVICES HERE TUESDAY FOR MRS. BEN NIEHUS

Funeral services for Mrs. Ben (Katherine/Kate) Niehus, 72, well known and longtime resident of the Remsen community who died early Saturday at the Sacred Heart hospital, LeMars, were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church here Tuesday morning. Offering the requiem High Mass was St. Mary’s pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Francis P. Schultes.

Mrs. Niehus had been in failing health for a long time and was a hospital patient two months.
BORN IN CARROLL COUNTY
Born February 13, 1888, on a farm in Carroll county, Ia., she was the daughter of the later Barney and Mary Deiterman who brought their family to the Remsen community in 1895 and settled on a farm here.

She married Ben Niehus on June 3, 1913, the ceremony taking place in St. Mary’s church and performed by the then pastor, Rev. Joseph D. Fisch, now of LeMars. The couple farmed here continuously until their retirement to town in 1951.

Mr. Niehus passed away January 3, of this year.

Mrs. Niehus, a lifelong member of the Catholic church and a devout member of St. Mary’s congregation these many years, was an outstanding Christian woman in every respect. She was a highly devoted wife and mother and won the respect and esteem of her every acquaintance. Her passing brought keenest regret over the countryside where she had been known for 65 years and came also as a source of sorrow to the esteemable family.

She was a member of Christian Mother’s society of St. Mary’s parish and of the Catholic Daughters of America, Remsen court.

Surviving are six sons: Cletus of Castle Rock, Colo,; Raymond of Riverside, Calif.; and Eddie, Gilbert, LeRoy and Walter, all of Remsen. Other survivors are three brothers, Henry Deiterman of Luverne, Minn.; Barney Deiterman of Geddes, S.D.; and Joseph Deiterman of Pipestone, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Deitering of El Cirrito, Calif., and Mrs. Clara McWaid of Winner, S.D. There are 17 grandchildren.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two brothers, John and Peter Deiterman and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Deitering and Mrs. George (Anna) Sturm.

Wake was held Sunday and Monday at the Fisch Funeral Home, which had charge of funeral arrangements and direction, with burial in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Pallbearers were Cyril, Raymond, Vincent, Gerald and Donald Deiterman, nephews, and Kenneth Beelmann.
