LEONARD D. BLACK
MERRILL, Iowa – Leonard D. Black, 64, of Sioux Falls, S.D., died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at his residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Robert J. Waters officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Monday, with a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. at Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars, Iowa.
Mr. Black was born on August 13, 1934, at St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Fred and Margaret (Richie) Black. He grew up and received his education in Missouri. As a young man he moved to Colorado. Most of his life he managed various golf courses in Colorado, some of which he helped build.
He married Arlene Grooms in 1963 in Colorado. They had three daughters.
On July 30, 1988, he married Margaret (Bauler) Covert in Colorado. They lived in Denver for a few years before moving to Rapid City, S.D. In 1998 they moved to Sioux Falls.
He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Sioux Falls.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Sioux Falls; three daughters, Charla Blossom and her husband Dale of Grants Pass, Ore., and twin daughters, Michelle Gardner and her husband Joe of Denver, and Janelle Black, also of Denver; two granddaughters, Taylor D. and Caitlyn Blossom, five stepsons, Terry and his wife Wanda Covert of Chamisol, N.M., Melvin and his wife Vicky Covert of Denver, Mike and his wife Becky Covert of Sioux Falls, Jimmy Covert of Denver, and Randy and his wife Dawn Covert, of Parker, S.D.; a stepdaughter and her husband Yvonne and Sammy Lopez of Mora, N.M.; a brother, Jack and his wife Mary of Dallas, Texas; a mother-in-law, Margaret Van Voorst of Merrill; sisters and brothers-in-law, Zelda and Ray Sherlock of Merrill, Charles and Sandy Bauler of Rock Valley, Iowa, Jack Bauler of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Barbara Bornholtz of Buffalo, Wyo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margie Oakland; and a brother, Hallard Black.
Pallbearers will be Steve, Bob, Eugene, Roger and Kirk Sherlock, Mike Schoen and Randy Olson.
