THOMAS E. BICE

AKRON, Iowa – Thomas E. Bice, 50, of Akron, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha from a brief illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Vermillion, S.D., with Sandy Aakre officiating. Burial will be at Bluff View Cemetery with military graveside rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3061 of Vermillion. Arrangements are under the direction of Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Mr. Bice was born Jan. 8, 1950, in Vermillion, the son of David and Bonnie (Collar) Bice. He married Pat Towner on Aug. 2, 1972, in Harrisburg, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971. He was stationed in Vietnam from 1969-1970. Following discharge from the military, he was employed with Wells Fargo before joining the Vermillion Police Department in 1972. He then joined the Union County Sheriff’s Department. In 1979 he joined the Akron Police Department and then joined the Sheriff’s Department of Plymouth County. He served 20 years as a deputy and most recently held the rank of sergeant.

He was a member of the Peace Officers, VFW Post 3061 of Vermillion, the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputys Association and the American Legion.

He enjoyed fishing and horses.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Chad and his wife, Beth of Great Falls, Mont., Jeremy and his wife, Jill, of Vermillion, and Kyle of Akron; two daughters, Bonnie and her husband, Jeremy Murfin of LeMars, Iowa, and Savanna of Akron; a sister, Janel and her husband, David Wherry of Vermillion; a brother, John and his wife, Jennie of Williston, N.D.; two uncles and an aunt; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronald, a niece, Christine Wherry.

Pallbearers will be Lynn Steckelberg, Chuck Hoffman, Les “Kermie” Kephart, Tom Schneider, Kevin Christenson, Craig “Bart” Bartlozzi.
