H. W. Goodenow, early settler in Rutland Township in 1883, entered the portals of eternity last Wednesday forenoon, January 13th at the St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City, after a ten week's illness following an operation. Mr. Goodenow had attained the age of 75 years, 3 months and 27 days.

Hosea W. Goodenow was born in Jackson County, Iowa, September 16, 1850, where he grew to young man-hood, and it was there he received his education. In the year of 1877, he and his mother and brothers and sisters, set out for the western part of the state, settling in Sac County, near Lake View, where they lived only one year. In 1878 they came to Woodbury County. During this time Mr. Goodenow was married to Miss Caroline Mariaty (sic-Moriarty) on September 28, 1879, and together in the year of 1883 they settled on a piece of land two and one half miles west of Pierson. There all the hardships of the early days were experienced. Under the dint of hard labor the land yielded her increase and a bit of prosperity came their way. Here the only child, a daughter, Lura Mae, was born and grew to womanhood. In the year of 1907, Mrs. Goodenow passed away. Mr. Goodenow in 1911 married Mrs. Minnie Ivers. They continued living on the same farm until six years ago, when they retired from farm life and moved to town.

Mr. Goodenow is survived by his widow, and his daughter, Mrs. S. S. Smith of Kelso, Washington; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. S. S. Strohm, Pierson, Iowa; Mrs. J. P. Kruser, Lake View, Iowa; Mrs. Jane Dunkin, Spencer, Minnesota, and a number of nieces and nephews, besides a legion of friends who morn his departure from this life.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the house at 1:30 and from the Church of Christ at 2 o'clock, with Rev. J. R. Adams and Rev. Wingret, pastor of the United Brethern church at Kingsley, a staunch friend of the deceased, being in charge. Interment was made in the Dunkers cemetery, west of town.

Having lived in this community for the past 43 years, Mr. Goodenow was known by every one, both old and young. He was a familiar figure in every public gathering and his friends were unnumbered.
