VERMILLION, S.D. – Ruth E. Root, 92, of Vermillion, died Friday, March 8, 1991 at the Southeastern Dakota Nursing Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ in Vermillion, with the Rev. Robert Inglis officiating. Burial will be in the Bluff view cemetery in Vermillion. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion.
Mrs. Root, the former Ruth Colby, was born Jan. 15, 1899, at Onawa, Iowa, daughter of Harry and Flora (Blackburn) Colby. She graduated from Onawa High School in 1917, and from Tabor (Iowa) College and Doan College in Crete, Neb. She did her graduate work at the University of South Dakota and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She was a high school speech, English and drama teacher, and school librarian for 40 years, in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota. She was in DeSmet, S.D., for nine years, and seven year in Vermillion, from 1944 to 1946 and 1960 to 1965. She married Blaine L. Root July 22, 1953, in Boulder. He died Feb. 22, 1976, in Vermillion. She had lived at the nursing home since October 1976.
She was a 31-year member of the United Church of Christ, a 60-year member of the O.E.S., a charter member of the Vermillion PEO Club and a 30-year member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International.
Survivors include four step-daughters, Eleanor Fitzgerald of Round Rock, Texas, Elaine Phillips, and Peggy Cruse, of Madera, Calif., and Virginia Nelson, of San Francisco; and a sister, Eleanor Cooper, of St. Paul, Minn.
She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
