Mark Lucken, Grandson of State Senator, buried
Funeral services for Mark Lucken, 18-year-old paralyzed son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald W. Lucken of rural Akron who died Friday at St. Joseph hospital, Sioux City, were at 2 p.m. Monday at the Plymouth Presbyterian church rural, LeMars.
Rev. Charles Kruse, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Mauer funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Young Lucken, an honor graduate of Akron high school last May, had been hospitalized for three weeks.
His graduation marked a milestone for the spirited youth who virtually was paralyzed from the neck down resulting from a near-fatal football injury in his freshman year.
He completed his high school education via a special intercom system which stretched over nearly 11 miles of telephone cable connecting the Lucken home with the Akron school building. His actual presence in class was limited to a half a dozen times in a three and a half year period.
Mark ranked third scholastically in his class of 48 pupils. During his senior year his grade average was 3.678 and the top grade average in the class of 1963 was 3.706.
A lifelong resident of Plymouth county, he was born Jan. 14, 1945, at Hawarden. He was a member of Plymouth Presbyterian church and had been active in 4-H work until his accident.
Survivors in addition to his parents include two sisters, Wendy, 13, and Fayann, 11, both at home; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. John Robertson of LeMars, and the paternal grandparents, State Sen. and Mrs. J. Henry Lucken, also of LeMars.
