Husband of former resident killed in Spanish plane crash
Capt. John Jarecki, 32, husband of the former Claudia Jimenez, 29, LeMars, was killed Wednesday morning (Jan. 14, 1981) in Torrejon, Spain, north of Madrid.
Lois Jimenez, LeMars, mother of Claudia, said she received the phone call at 8 a.m. Wednesday. She said it is six hours earlier in Spain.
The airforce career captain was on a routine check-out flight in his capacity as flight instructor when the plane, piloted by the student, crashed. Captain Jarecki was in the rear seat and both were killed. Mrs. Jimenez said services are expected to be held in Arlington Heights near Chicago late next week. The captain was born and raised in Arlington Heights.
The couple had lived in Spain more than two years. They were to end their tour there in May and return to the United States.
Services are being held at the Torrejon airforce base.
Mrs. Jimenez said her daughter, Mrs. Elroy (Judy) DeBoer, LeMars, received the first telephone call of the tragedy.
Parents of Capt. Jarecki are John Jarecki sr. and his wife Emily of Brea, Calif., formerly of Chicago.
Claudia Jimenez and Capt. Jarecki were married nine years ago in a military service at the United Presbyterian church in LeMars.
