HOLSTEIN – Matthew Warren Schweitzberger, 17, of Holstein, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 1995, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee of injuries he received in a one-car accident at Cherokee Tuesday night.
He was born Oct. 30, 1978, in Sioux City to Steven and Mary (Spooner) Schweitzberger. He attended the Kingsley-Pierson school from kindergarten through first grade and then attended Galva-Holstein schools beginning in second grade.
At the time of his death, he was a junior at Galva-Holstein High School where he had been active in football, golf, baseball, and wrestling. He served as vice president of his class and was a member of the student council. Academics were very important to him.
He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein and Catholic Youth Organization.
Survivors include his parents; one brother, Michael Schweitzberger of Holstein; two sisters, Elizabeth and Emily, both of Holstein; his paternal grandmother, Betsey Schweitzberger of Kingsley; his maternal grandmother, Alfreda Spooner of Pierson; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Warren Spooner; his paternal grandfather, Harold Schweitzberger; and one uncle, Dennis Schweitzberger.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Galva-Holstein High School Gymnasium in Holstein. The Rev. Mark Duchaine will officiate, with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Holstein.
Visitation began at 11 a.m. today (Friday), and continues until 8 p.m., with the family present from 3 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. at the Barker Funeral Home in Holstein. There will also be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
