Harry J. Varenhorst

Harry J. Varenhorst, 71, LeMars, a Plymouth County native and lifelong resident, died Tuesday (Jan. 15, 1991) at Floyd Valley Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Merrill, with Rev. Frank Philipp officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Craig.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mr. Varenhorst was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Grant Township, Plymouth County, the son of Henry R. and LeDena Ludwigs Varenhorst. On Feb. 22, 1949, he married Eva I. Herman at the home of the bride's parents, rural LeMars. The couple farmed until 1982, when retired. In 1988, they moved into LeMars.

Mr. Varenhorst was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Merrill, and Fraternal Order of Eagles, LeMars.

Survivors are his wife, Eva; two sons, Virgil of LeMars and Gene and his wife, Kathi, of Woodstock, Ga.; two daughters, Joan Ernst and her husband Dennis and Mary Lenz, all of LeMars; five brothers and their wives, William and Ruth, Fritz and Katherine, Erwin and Myrna, Norman and Lois and Elmer and Cleone, all of LeMars; a sister, Revelry Jurgenson and her husband, Robert, of Sioux City; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother and a brother in infancy.
