Saturday rites here for former businessman
Charles Nathan Williams, 57, who lived at 3737 Falcon, Long Beach, Calif., a former LeMars businessman died Tuesday (Sept 11, 1973) at veteran’s hospital, Long Beach, after a lingering illness of cancer.
He was born Nov. 21, 1915, at Everett, Wash., the son of Harry and Rosa (Wilson) Williams. He farmed until he opened the DX café in LeMars which he operated from 1951 through 1962. After that he went into the contracting business until he moved to California in 1966.
He had spent 9 ½ years in the navy.
Mr. Williams was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor of LeMars in 1965.
On Jan. 2, 1940, he married Verna N. Gabel at Sioux City. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, Masonic lodge, Giblem 322 AF and AM; the American Legion and past member of the LeMars Drum and Bugle corp.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams visited their family here for two weeks in August after which he reentered the veteran’s hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Presbyterian church, rural LeMars. Burial will be in the church cemetery under direction of the Mauer funeral home. Rev. James Offrink will officiate.
A prayer service is to be held Friday evening at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be James Gabel, Mark Doering, Myrle Truesdell, Harlan Rowe, Merlin Beck and Dr. Robert Drennen.
Survivors are his wife, Verna, Long Beach; two sons, LaVoy Williams, Whittier, Calif. and Jerry Williams, Topanga, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Glenna) Doering, LeMars; four grandchildren, Lisa Ann and Terry Robert Doering and Ann Marie and Susan Katherine Williams, three sisters, Mrs. Sig (Alice) Simonsen, Everett, Calif.: Mrs. Howard (Glenna) Young, Brushton, New York; Mrs. J. B. (Louise) Magill, Everett, Calif. and a brother, Kenneth Williams, Everett, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
