LEMARS, Iowa – Evelyn Mabel Smith, 75, of LeMars died Saturday, April 26, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Plymouth Presbyterian Church in rural LeMars, with the Rev. Randy Knuth officiating. Burial will be in first Plymouth Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present after 7 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Howard, S.D., the daughter of Lloyd and Mabel (Noble) Port. She moved with her family to Akron, Iowa, where she played on the 1939 Iowa State champion Girls Basketball team.
She married Bruce R. Smith on Dec. 21, 1940, in Pender, Neb. She was employed as a beautician in Sioux City and later as a bookkeeper for the Singer company. In 1976, the couple purchased and operated a family resort at Lake Irene near Alexandria, Minn. They sold the resort in 1977.
She was a member of Cresent Park United Methodist Church in Sioux City and the First Plymouth Presbyterian Church in Plymouth County. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Roger and Barbara of Richmond, Va., Patrick and Helen of Cerritos, Calif., and Richard and Mary of San Ramon, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Julia and Robert Strawn of Kansas City, 11 grandchildren; a great-grand child; two sisters and their husbands, Beulah and Bill Gant of Hawarden, Iowa and Bonnie and Donald Rice of Sioux City; and a brother and his wife, Lloyd “Jack” and Kathleen Port of LeMars.
Pallbearers will be Rob and Bill Conway, Mike Gant, John Strawn, Pat Schmidt, Jon Nissley, Doug Rice, and Scott Port.
A memorial has been established.
