AKRON, Iowa -- Calvin D. "Cal" Robertson, 80, of Akron passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Akron Care Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., in Akron, with the Rev. Jean Morse officiating. There will be a time of munch and fellowship following the service. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Albert E. Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Condolences may be sent online to wwww.carlsenfuneralhome.com.
Calvin Dean Robertson was born April 18, 1926, on the family farm near Akron, the son of John and Ruth (Dean) Robertson. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. He attended Portlandville Country School and later Chatsworth (Iowa) School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945, serving his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to the Akron area to help his family on the farm.
He was united in marriage to Derith Schmidt on Feb. 15, 1953, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Preston Township. They farmed near Akron for many years. After retiring in 1989, he worked part-time for the Plymouth County Road Department.
He was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., where he had served on the church council and as a deacon. He was a former post commander for the American Legion Albert E. Hoschler Post 186. He had also served as a trustee for the Riverside Cemetery for many years. He was a member of Plymouth County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed bowling and traveling. He also enjoyed music, especially singing, and his two dogs, Bear and Brownie. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of more than 53 years, Derith of rural Akron; five children and their spouses, Patricia and Roger Patterson of Akron, Rebecca and Randy Klaus of Hawarden, Iowa, Robert "Bob" and Susan Robertson of Akron, Nancy and Jan Page of Sioux City and Donald and Deb Robertson of Akron; 12 grandchildren and their spouses; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother[-in-law] and his wife, Donald and Marlys Schmidt of Hawarden, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jay D. Robertson; two sisters, Darlene Lucken and Marjorie Robertson; a sister-in-law, Opal Robertson; a brother-in-law, Bud Lucken; and many other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Shane Coyle, Jon Coyle, Ryan Coyle, Clark Danielson, Kenneth Schmidt and Larry Reppe. Honorary pallbearers will be member of the American Legion Albert E. Hoschler Post 186.
