John “Freeman” Howard

John Howard, 68, of Akron, Iowa, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, of the Akron Convalescent Care Center.

Mr. Howard was born October 29, 1932, in rural Akron, Iowa, the son of Bertrum D. and Johanna M. (Kemp) Howard. Mr. Howard attended rural Akron school. He lived in the Akron area and married Mary Knecht May 30, 1960, in Sioux City, Iowa. They farmed and milked cows in the Sioux City and Akron, Iowa, and Hudson, South Dakota, areas. They divorced in April, 1964. Mr. Howard worked at Central West Cold Storage in Sioux City, ran a gas station in Yankton, South Dakota, and drove a gravel truck for Higman’s Sand and Gravel until he retired in 1988.

He was a member of the South Sioux City Eagles. He enjoyed his horses and music. He started playing guitar in public when he was 16. He toured the country for one year and then returned to that area and formed the Country Wrangler Band that played for more than 20 years. In 1963 he moved to Akron and married Pat Reineke December 29, 1966, in Miami, Oklahoma. Due to his ill health he moved to the Care Center in July of 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Pat; two daughters and their husbands: Cheryl and Dean Iverson, of Yankton, [copy ends here]

John Howard, 68, of Akron, Iowa, died Thursday, December 14, 2000 at the Akron Care Center.

Funeral services were 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 18, 2000 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Betty Martin officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery Akron, Iowa. Visitation was from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2000 with the family present from 2-4 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Mr. Howard was born October 29, 1932 in rural Akron, Iowa. The son of Bertrum D. and Johanna M. (Kemp) Howard. Mr. Howard attended rural Akron School. He lived in Akron area and married Mary Knecht May 30,1950 in Sioux City. They farmed and milked cows in Sioux City, Akron, and Hudson areas. They divorced April 1984. Mr. Howard worked at Central West Cold Storage" in Sioux City, ran a gas station in Yankton, SD, worked for the State Hospital in SD, and drove gravel truck for Higman's Sand and Gravel until he retired in 1988.

Survivors include: his wife Pat, two daughters Cheryl and her husband Dean Iverson of Yankton, SD., Mary and her husband Dennis Iverson of Hudson, SD., and one son John and his wife Tracy Howard of Alcester, SD. One stepson Daniel and his wife Mary Twito of Bethel, Alaska. One brother Clayton and his wife Eunice Howard of Phoenix, AZ and one sister Ida Heitman also of Phoenix AZ. Nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Three step great-grandchildren and two step great-great-grandsons. Many nieces and nephews, and a special companion, Joe.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, one sister, and one brother.

Organist was Carol Harris. Pallbearers were Dennis Howard, Mario Howard, Gary Howard, Bob Howard, Delvin Howard, and Steve McLagan. Honorary pallbearers were Arnold Knecht, Jay Schoenberner, Doug Thompson, Steve Schoenberner, France Swenson, Cory Swensen, Jennifer Arden, Christopher Howard, Scott Howard, Caitlyn Twito, and Nathan Vander Helm. Lunch was served at the Church immediately following the burial at the cemetery.
