NEWBORN INFANT DIES
AFTER MIDNIGHT CRASH
SOUTH OF SIOUX CENTER
SIX PERSONS HURT
ALL THE INJURED ARE FROM HOSPERS
AND SIOUX CENTERA newborn baby was dead and six persons, including the infant’s mother, were hurt in a midnight collision of two cars Monday on highway 75 one mile south of Sioux Center.
The infant boy was born to Mrs. Dennis Zwaggerman, 18, Hospers, about three and a half hours after the accident and succumbed 10 minutes later at Sioux Center hospital. Mrs. Zwaggerman was described by hospital officials as “in fairly good condition.”
Mrs. Zwaggerman was riding in a card driven by Cornelius Van Valzen, 25, of Sioux Center, which collided with one drive by Larry Kosters, about 19, also of Sioux Center. The accident occurred according to police officials, when Kosters apparently went to sleep and lost control of his vehicle.
Kosters, who was riding alone, was unhurt, as was Van Valzen. Mrs. Zwaggerman was one of six passengers in the Van Valzen car, five others of whom were injured.
The injured included the Zwaggerman infant’s father, Dennis, 18, the infant’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Zwaggerman of Hospers, his uncle, Glen, 21, also of Hospers and Mrs. Van Valzen, 25, who suffered a broken rib. She was treated and at Sioux Center hospital and dismissed.
Peter, 50, Dennis and Glen Zwaggerman were taken to Methodist hospital at Sioux City. Hospital officials said this morning that Glen was in “poor” condition and Peter’s condition was “fair.” No condition report was available on Dennis. Mrs. Peter Zwaggerman, 48, was said to be in “fair” condition in the Sioux Center hospital.
