Opal L. Hummel

AKRON--Opal Lavina Hummel, 91, of Akron, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 1994, at the Akron Care Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Hummel was born Dec. 11, 1902, in Westfield, the daughter of John Otto and Jennie A. (Moniger) Bliss. She graduated from Westfield High School. She married Albert W. Hummel Dec. 8, 1923, in Westfield. They lived for a short time in Sioux City and then moved to Westfield, where they operated a confectionery store; the Hummel Grocery Store; a hardware store, and was the first in Northwest Iowa to operate a propane service. They moved to Akron in 1959 and to Bella Vista, Ark., in October 1991. Mr. Hummel died Feb. 22, 1992.

Mrs. Hummel was a former president of the Westfield Congregational Church. She was a member of the GFWC Tuesday Club and had served as county chairperson of the IFWC. She served 35 years as chairperson of the Christmas Seal program, and was a member of the GFWC Book and Thimble. She was a 62-year member and Worthy Matron of OES; a member of chapter GC PEO, and was a Rainbow Parent.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Thorson of Akron; two grandsons and their wives, Mark and Gloria Thorson of Akron and Mason and Karen Thorson of Rapid City, S. D.; three granddaughters and their husbands, Melinda and Ken Wickman of St. Louis, Mo.; Martha and Dave Morin of Akron, and Mary Joyce and Scott Ferguson of Iowa City; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Roy Bliss, and a sister, Eva R. Lilly Knapp.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron with the Rev. Donald Greenough officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today (Friday), with an Order of Eastern Star service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
