Margaret S. Holton

Mrs. James (Margaret) Holton, 85, of LeMars, died Friday, March 24, 1995, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, following a brief illness.

The former Margaret Barthole was born Feb. 25, 1910, at Remsen, the daughter of Jean Pierre and Marieanne (Kirsch) Barthole. She grew up near Remsen and graduated from Remsen Public High School. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and later taught at a country school for several years.

On May 19, 1932, she married James P. Holton in Remsen. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the Remsen area until 1953, when the family moved to LeMars and continued farming. Mr. Holton died Nov. 23, 1985.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Altar Society in LeMars.

Survivors include six daughters, Shirley Huewe and her husband, Philip of Salem, Ore., La Vonne Kommes and her husband, Don of LeMars, Sharon Collins of Sunnyvale, Calif., Beverly Humphrey and her husband, Robert of Sacramento, Calif., Joyce Crawford and her husband, Steven of Charles City, and Maureen Carroll and her husband, Mick of LeMars; three sons, James Holton and his wife, Camille of Brighton, Mich., Loren Holton and his wife, Barbara of Detroit, Mich., and Thomas Holton of Santa Barbara, Calif.; 28 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a brother, Raymond Barthole and his wife, Ruth of Deer Park, Wash., and two sisters, Mrs. Liz Frericks of Wabasso, Minn., and Mrs. Marie Nussbaum and her husband, Milton of Alton.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Charles, Nick and Jack Barthole, and a great-grandson.

Services were 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. James Catholic Church in LeMars with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial was in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery in Oyens. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars.
