AKRON, Iowa -- Wendell Snow, 86, of Akron passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at a Sioux City Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Laurice Streyffeler officiating. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Le Mars, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Albert E. Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Freedom Masonic Lodge 434 of Akron, all at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Charles Wendell Snow was born Nov. 15, 1918, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Charles and Minnie (Cooper) Snow. He attended school in Smithland, Iowa, and graduated from Smithland High School in 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged. Upon his returned, he went to work as a meat cutter for the George Schindler Grocery Store in Akron.

He was united in marriage to Helen Nelsen on July 15, 1950, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He continued to work as a meat cutter for various grocery stores before going to work in the early 1970s as a serviceman for the A.W. Hummel Propane Co. in Westfield, Iowa, and later for Thermogas. After his retirement in 1983, he continued to work part-time until his health problems forced him to stop.

He was a very active member of the Akron community. He was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, where he was a former church councilman, trustee and usher. He was very involved in the Freedom Masonic Lodge 434 of Akron, where he was a past Master. He was a member of the Sioux City Consistory and past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Elk Point, S.D., and the American Legion Albert E. Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially when it came to gardening and working in his yard. Most of all, he enjoyed the times spent with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of more than 54 years, Helen of Akron; three children, Steve Snow and his wife, Sharon of DeQueen, Ark., Jim Snow and his wife, Doris of Rapid City, S.D., and Mary Willms of Akron; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lovell Snow; and a sister, Delilah Snow.
