WILLIAM POPKEN

William Popken, 80, of LeMars, died early Monday, July 11, 1994, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

William Henry Popken was born Sept. 20, 1913, in rural Akron, the son of Fred and Reaka (Johnson) Popken. He was united in marriage to Esther Osterbuhr on March 19, 1931, at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township. He was involved in farming until 1967 when the couple moved to LeMars. After moving to LeMars, he worked for Westmar College until his retirement in 1983.

Mr. Popken served several positions at Christ Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, upholstering, gardening and fishing.

Survivors are his wife; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Romain and Ardis Popken of Hinton, Gary and Shirley Popken of Brandon, S.D., Rodney Popken of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Bill and Diane Popken of Cedar Rapids; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jenean and Robert Lesher of Mesa, Ariz., Barbara and Paul Kunkel of Moville, and LeeAnn and Larry DeHaan of Orange City; one sister, Katherine Bloomquist of Magnet, Neb.; 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Varrel, one grandson, Timothy, six brothers and five sisters.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township, rural LeMars, with the Rev. Stephany Sanborn officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
