Duane Lee Plate was born Sept. 2, 1962, at Pella, the son of Donald Lee and Doretha Joanne Nieuwsma Plate.

A sophomore at LeMars Community High School, Duane has worked part-time at the Fareway grocery store.

The Plate family had lived at Pella and Prairie City, Iowa, Worthington, Minn. and Mitchell, S.D., before moving to LeMars.

Duane had lettered in swimming at Mitchell, S.D.

Surviving are his parents; a twin brother, Douglas J. and a sister Donna Lynn, both at home; another sisters, Debora Dawn, a student at Dakota State college, Madison; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Dick Rolffs, Pella; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Plate, Prairie City.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John Nieuwsma.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, LeMars, with Rev. Roger Bouwman officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens under the direction of the Mauer funeral home.

LeMars police received a call for an ambulance at 3:37 p.m. from Calvin Kooiker, LeMars, who had been sledding in the park with his family and found Plate’s body in the lower portion of the park near the Floyd river.

Efforts to revive the youth by Dr. Charles Keenan, LeMars, via cardio pulmonary resuscitation procedures failed and the youth was taken to the hospital, police chief Wilbur Petersen said.

Dr. Keenan went to the scene after a telephone call for help was made from his home in nearby Armel Acres.

Police reported the youth had been near the Floyd river with his twin brother, Doug, who had returned home earlier.

Petersen surmised the youth slipped and fell and the .22 caliber Savage single shot pistol he was carrying discharged.

LeMars police are continuing their investigation of a Sunday afternoon incident in which a 16-year-old LeMars youth was accidentally shot and killed.

Duane Lee Plate of 503 12th Ave. SW was pronounced dead on arrival at Floyd Valley Hospital of a .22 caliber pistol wound in the right portion of his chest.
