Vernon E. Penning

Vernon E. Penning, 80, of LeMars, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.

Vernon E. Penning was born July 12, 1917, on the family farm in Elgin Township, the son of John and Lula (sic--Lulu) (Lancaster) Penning. He was raised in the LeMars area and attended LeMars Central High School. Following high school he moved to Hawarden where he worked on farms and started driving trucks. On Aug. 31, 1940, he married Ruth White in LeMars. Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to Burbank, Calif., where he worked for Lockheed Industries. After living in California for five years, the family returned to the LeMars area where he farmed and drove truck.

From 1972 until his retirement in 1982, Mr. Penning drove truck for Westway Liquid Feeds. During his retirement he enjoyed helping neighborning farmers and sharpening saws. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.

Mr. Penning was a member of the Seney United Methodist Church where he had served as a trustee. He has also served as a trustee of Elgin Township.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis And Richard Werth of Minneapolis, Minn., Patricia and Steve Moir of Hot Springs, S. D., and Barbara and John Kurth of Minneapolis, Minn.; and son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Jeannie Penning, of Bayfield, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Hinde of Montevideo, Minn., and Mabel Kennedy of LeMars; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Kimberly Moir.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Seney United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dave Higdon officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Monday) with the family present to greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Mauer Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Pallbearers will be Todd Kurth, Brad Kurth, Ted Schurman, Greg Moir, Troy Penning, and Brian Peterson.
