Former Joan Koth Accidentally Shot in Montana;
Rites Set here Wednesday

Mrs. Joan Carol Markley, 29, Billings, Mont., the mother of a 7-week-old daughter, died about 10 p.m., Friday (April 23, 1976) in her westside Billings, Mont., home of a gunshot wound in the back of the head.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Koth, LeMars.

Funeral services at Calvary United Methodist Church, LeMars, are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Tom Balm officiating.

Burial will be in a LeMars cemetery under the direction of the Mauer funeral home, LeMars.

Services will be held Tuesday at Billings under direction of the Settergren Memorial chapel.

Joan’s father is a member of the Westmar College development staff.

Authorities said the shooting was accidental; the young women’s husband Gordon Markley, was in shock and could not tell officials what had happened, the Billings Gazette told the Daily Sentinel Monday morning. It was reported he was hospitalized after the accident, but he was released Saturday.

Mrs. Markley, the former Joan Koth, was born in LeMars Jan. 4, 1947. Her mother is the former Eva Newbury.

Joan grew up and attended LeMars schools, graduating in 1965. She was a 1969 graduate of Westmar College and taught school in Rochester, Minn., from 1969 through 1972.

Her marriage to Gordon Markley took place in June 1972 at Rochester. The couple moved to Mankato, Minn., after their marriage and to Billings in 1973. They lived at 5300 Danford Lane.

She was a member of the Billings Baptist church and a former member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, LeMars.

Mrs. Markley was dedicated to the Christian education of children, her family said.

Survivors are her husband and an infant daughter, Jill, of Billings; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton G. Koth, LeMars; a sister, Mrs. David (Gwen) Mead, the wife of Rev. Mead of Hector, Minn., and two brothers, C. Eugene Koth, Bettendorf, and Robert Koth, of Chicago.
