Larry Lang, 28, LeMars, and Clarence Steimke, 61, Larrabee, died a few hours after a 2-car crash 2 miles south of LeMars at 2:45 p.m., Sunday. Both men were alone in their cars.

Highway Patrolman William Wruck, one of the investigating officers, said the crash occurred at the intersection of county road P (Neptune road) and county road A, at the foot of a hill between the Dean Granquist and Mrs. Howard Smith farms.

He said the road was dry and it was not raining when the two cars collided at the wide intersection 2 miles south of LeMars.

Patrolman Wruck said it appeared the 1966 eastbound Mercury driven by Steimke ran the stop sign and hit the 1960 southbound Lang Chevrolet broadside.

He reported both cars landed in the southeast ditch. A passerby said the Chevrolet landed in a muddy ditch near a fence and almost into a field. Both cars were demolished.

The Luken-Johnson ambulance was called and took both men, suffering from severe head and chest injuries, to the Floyd Valley Hospital. Both men were removed from their cars.

Officers said Mr. Steimke died at 4:45 p.m. and Mr. Lang died at 5:05 p.m.

Mr. Lang lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lang at 440 Second Ave. NE. He was a meat cutter at the Miller Lockers at Merrill.

Cars were towed to LeMars by Stoos Bros.

Other investigating officers were Highway Patrolman Dick Helmers and the sheriff’s office.

The body of Mr. Lang was taken to the Luken-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mr. Steimke was taken to Boothy funeral home at Cherokee.

The two fatalities were the fourth and fifth traffic deaths in Plymouth county this year, according to the sheriff’s office.

Larry was born May 23, 1939, in LeMars, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lang. He was a 1958 graduate of Hinton High School and served four years in the Navy.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church. Rev. Lowell Boetcher will officiate and burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens under the direction of the Luken-Johnson Funeral Home.

Survivors are his parents of LeMars; a brother, Duane, of Tracey, Calif.; and his grandmother, Mrs. J. W. Jones, LeMars.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
