MARCUS, Iowa -- Mary "Babe" Lauters, 92, of Marcus died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Richard Remmes officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a wake service at 7:30 p.m., at Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel in Marcus.

Mrs. Lauters, the former Mary Elizabeth Balster, was born Sept. 3, 1909, in Dixon, Neb., the daughter of August and Mary (Staab) Balster. Her mother died when she was four weeks old and she was raised in Remsen by her grandfather, Carl Staab, and her uncles and aunts. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated in 1927. She obtained her teaching certificate at Western Union College in Le Mars, Iowa, and taught rural school in Plymouth County northwest of Remsen.

She married Raymond Lauters on July 28, 1931, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. they lived near Remsen until 1940, when they moved to a farm south of Marcus. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed her family, church, gardening and playing cards.

Survivors include five sons and their wives, Peter and Rosie of Marcus, Robert and Barbara of Dodge City, Kan., Douglas and Heidi of Elgin, Iowa, Dan and LuAnn of Garner, Iowa, and Larry and Sue of Runnels, Iowa; three daughters, Jeannine Dreckman of Le Mars, Iowa, Audrey and her husband, Tony Delperdang, of Remsen, and Marlene and her husband, Jim Boyle, of Danbury, Iowa; 41 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two half sisters and their husbands, Jean and Norvin Solie of Grayslake, Ill., and Geraldine and Jim Butler of Riverwoods, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Margaret Balster; a son, James; a son-in-law, Carl Dreckman; a daughter-in-law, Candice Lauters; seven grandchildren; a granddaughter's husband, Brad Mosier; a sister, Lucy McLaughlin; a half sister, Virginia O'Brien; two stepsisters, Gertrude Gallupi and Marie Weber; and two stepbrothers, Henry and Walter Gottmer.
