LE MARS, Iowa -- Shirley Mae Heien, 65, of Le Mars died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Jean Morse officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mrs. Heien was born May 30, 1936, in Hinton, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Julia (Husman) Baack. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. She graduated from Hinton High School in 1954. She married Lyle Heien on Nov. 12, 1954, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. They moved to rural Le Mars following their marriage, where she was a homemaker and helped Lyle with the farming operation. She later worked for Le Mars Mutual Insurance Company from 1972 to 1979. She was also employed by Westmar College Catering Service, Federal Land Bank and in June 2000 retired from the Le Mars Community Schools where she worked for 16 years in the school lunch program. They moved to Le Mars in 1984 when Lyle retired from farming.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was active in the church women's group, building and grounds committee, and Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting, volunteering for church activities, and most of all being with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband; a daughter and her husband, Kathleen and Delmar Otten of Tea, S.D.; a son, Wayne Heien of Le Mars; a granddaughter, Kayleen Otten; two stepgrandchildren, Danae and Dustin Otten; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Ed Nelson of Sioux City; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Pallbearers will be Rick Westhoff, Calvin Husman, Don Kniffen, Mel Baack, Richard Husman and Louis Westhoff.
