James Heidbrink, 19, was killed instantly at 6 p.m. Friday (Nov. 16, 1979) when the jeep he was driving went off hiway 75 near Sioux City and rolled.
He was pinned beneath the vehicle, highway patrol trooper Craig Ford said.
“The jeep went off the road for no apparent reason,” Ford said.
The trooper said there were two witnesses who were following the LeMars young man. Heidbrink was traveling north on hiway 75, north of Sioux City a mile and a half north of the Martin Truck Stop.
The jeep veered right into the east ditch, rolled several times and was demolished. The traffic fatality was the seventh in Plymouth County this year.
Assisting in the investigation was Plymouth County sheriff Dave Stock.
Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in LeMars.
Rev. Francis Staber officiated and burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens, LeMars.
The rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer funeral home.
James was born Dec. 13, 1959, in LeMars the son of Kenneth and Jean Lamoureux Heidbrink.
He was a student at Western Iowa Tech and a 1978 graduate of LeMars Community High School.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Heidbrink, LeMars; four sisters, Mrs. Tom (Joan) Susemihl, LeMars; Mrs. Mike (Jane) Malowski, Lawton, Okla.; Julie and Jill at home; two brothers, Joseph and Kenneth Jr., both at home; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lamoureux in Texas.
