KINGSLEY, Iowa -- Ruth M. Gross, 92, of Kingsley died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Congregational United Church of Christ in Kingsley, with the Rev. Robert Blair officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m., at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Ruth was born July 6, 1911, in Holstein, Iowa, the daughter of Grover and Kate (Kuchel) Clark. She graduated from Holstein High School and went to Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa and received a teaching degree. She first taught in a country school near Holstein and later taught at a country school near Kingsley.

On Sept. 17, 1948, she married Vernon Gross in Vermillion, S.D., in a double wedding with their friends, Theoan Kniseley and Bill Rector. Later, she owned and operated Ruth's Cafe and Ivy Room in Kingsley for 25 years. In 1961, she bought a dress shop in Kingsley, which she operated until 1986, at which time it was sold to Karen Lindgren of Kingsley. She also owned a dress shop in Remsen, Iowa for 10 year before closing it in 1981.

She was active in the National T.T.T. Society and served as a charter member of Chapter CI in Kingsley and was a former state president. The couple were also active members of United Congregational Church. She enjoyed reading and playing cards. After retirement, the couple spent winters in Scottsdale, Ariz. for 18 winters.

She is survived by her husband, Vernon; a sister, Catherine Lauthan of Oroville, Calif.; and three nieces, Mary Taylor of Oroville, Calif., Marty Ummel of San Rafael, Calif., and Karen Ash of Mira Loma, Calif.
