Albert Engbers, 87, longtime LeMars businessman, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 1996, at his winter home in Green Valley, Ariz.
Mr. Engbers was born Feb. 12, 1909, at Pella, to George and Grace (VanderLinden) Engbers. He was raised in Pella and received his education from the Central Academy. When he was 19 years old, he moved to Orange City and worked as a hired man. Mr. Engbers was married to Wilmina Guerink on June 19, 1934, in Orange City. In 1935 the couple moved to LeMars where he went to work for the LeMars Hatchery and Feed. In 1938 he purchased the LeMars Hatchery and Feed which he operated until his retirement in 1986. He then sold the business to Mark Schlesser.
He was a member of the Calvin Reformed Church where he was a Consistory Member for 21 years, past LeMars Community School Board member for nine years, past LeMars City Council member for eight years, long time LeMars Rotary member, and past president of the Iowa Poultry Association.
Through his years, Mr. Engbers enjoyed playing golf in LeMars and Arizona. During his retirement the couple had a home in Arizona and LeMars. During the last five years, Mr. Engbers was involved in a prison ministry in Tucson, Ariz.
Mr. Engbers was a member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Quartet for 27 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Glenda Larson, of Tucson, Ariz., and Verna and Darrell Bottjen, of Liberal, Kan.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Christine Nibbelink of Orange City and Leona Kooistra of Jenison, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Winifreda Heynen.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Roger Bouwman officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
